I brought an Ariens Compact 24 snow blower into the shop for an oil change. The Ariens Compact 24 snow blower is a 2-stage snow blower, and uses a single cylinder, 4-stroke engine with a displacement of 208 cubit centimeters. The engine has a 16 oz oil capacity, and uses 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. You have several different oil viscosity options to choose from depending on ambient temperature where the snow blower is used. I chose to use Valvoline 10W-30.

The drain plug for the motor oil is located at the rear of the machine. It uses an oil drain pipe that threads into the engine case, and than the drain plug attaches to the pipe. Two flat surfaces are milled into the pipe and are 180 degrees apart. These flat surfaces make it possible to hold the pipe with a 12mm wrench, and keep it from turning when you remove or install the drain plug. If a 12mm wrench isn’t used to hold the drain pipe when the drain plug is removed or installed, than you risk damaging the engine case by over tightening the drain pipe when the drain plug is installed, or creating an oil leak from loosening the drain pipe when the drain plug is removed. Holding the drain pipe with a wrench also helps to prevent damage from bending forces created from torque used to tighten or loosen the drain plug.

Whenever an oil change is performed on a gas engine it is important to warm up the engine before draining the oil. There are contaminants in used motor oil, and warming up the engine will help to agitate these contaminates and cause them to be suspended in the motor oil as you drain the oil out of the engine. These contaminates are also why motor oil companies add a dispersant additive to motor oil to help keep contaminants suspended in the motor oil and to prevent them from joining together and coagulating. Warming up the engine also helps the oil flow easier as it drains from the engine.

The first step in changing the engine oil is to warm up the engine for 5 to 10 minutes, than remove the oil drain plug with a 16 mm wrench while holding the drain pipe with a 12 mm wrench. After all the engine oil drains out apply Teflon tape to the threads on the oil drain pipe before installing the drain plug. This will help prevent oil leaks. Install the drain plug. Remove the Oil Filler Dipstick and pour 16 ounces of fresh oil back into the engine. Reinstall the dipstick all the way, than take it out again and check the oil level. It should be full.

Fuel Stabilizer

Fuel Stabilizer

I decided to add fuel stabilizer to the fuel in the snow blower gas tank in case the snow blower goes into storage without any prep work. This way the gas will stay fresh for the next season. One ounce of the fuel stabilizer treats 2.5 gallons of fuel. The snow blower gas tank has a capacity of 2.9 quarts. I used the following calculation to determine how much fuel stabilizer to add to the fuel:

– 2.9 quarts is equal to 92.8 ounces
– 2.5 gallons is equal to 320 ounces
– Since 1 ounce of fuel stabilizer treats 320 ounces of fuel, than 1/320 = .003125 ounces of fuel stabilizer to treat 1 ounce of gasoline.
– 92.8 ounces of gasoline needs 92.8 * .003125 = .29 ounces of fuel stabilizer
– .29 is equal to 4.64/16 (fraction), or between ¼ or 5/16 ounces of fuel stabilizer to treat 2.9 quarts of fuel

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
